Mason Zandi (6-9 275) of Chapin, South Carolina made an unofficial visit to the University of South Carolina this past Thursday with his father and decided we wanted to be a future Gamecock football as he gave his verbal pledge on Friday. Zandi will be a offensive lineman for USC and is the 10th commitment for the Gamecocks' 2012 recruiting class.
Zandi, a two-star OL prospect by 247sports, picked the Gamecocks over an offer from Clemson. He also had interest from East Carolina.
Love this pick-up for USC as he is a big kid that can get bigger. He is a local kid that wants to be a Gamecock and those are the kids that will give 110% as they have dreamed of wearing the 'garnet & black'. Zandi will likely end up playing one of the tackle spots in the future after Coach Elliott develops him and he pounds on some pounds.
Welcome Mason to the Gamecock family. He is the second pick-up for USC this week after Kelvin Rainey also decided to be a USC guy.
Flounder - I totally agree. I think this guy is a total diamond-in-the-rough. Per PK, he is only 16 - and he is already 6'9" and 275.
The main reason for my optimism is that I trust Shawn Elliot - and have a ton of respect for Robbie Caldwell. If they both wanted Zandi, then he's got to have a ton of upside. Even if he doesn't grow another inch in height, after a year of weights and nutrition, he will be able to carry 325. With those long arms, he will be a monster at either tackle spot.
I'm feeling bullish on our OL recruiting with Alex Kozan and Joe Harris making unoffcials this weekend.
I wish ever-so-slightly that Kelvin Rainey had waited until this weekend to give his commitment, since it got lost in the CWS swirl. Rainey is a 4 star and a real prize 'get'.
@tryptic67 I agree with you about the OL guys coming into USC as Coach Elliott is getting his type guys in which bolds well for usc in the future. And you are dead on about Rainey as he will be a good one for USC....think Jared Cook.
