Gamecocks Recruiting 2011: Welcome Jordan Montgomery
Written by Flounder
Saturday, 14 August 2010 14:51

jordanmontgomeryS/LB Jordan Montgomery kept his word after saying as soon as he gets on campus at South Carolina, he would give his verbal pledge to sign to play football for the Gamecocks.  Today after meeting with Coach Steve Spurrier, Jordan Montgomery (6-1 198) of Groveland, FL held firm and said he would sign with USC.

Jordan is being recruited to play the spur position at USC.  Rivals rates him as a 3 star recruit and the 43rd best outside linebacker in the nation.  Last season, he had 86 tackles with 2 sacks and an interception.

He also had offers from Arkansas, Iowa State, Maryland, Ole Miss, Central Florida and Western Kentucky.

He's a solid pick up for USC and he is the Gamecocks 13th commitment for the 2011 class.

Spartanburg (S.C.) DB Ronnie Martin has decidedhe wants to be a Gamecocks Football player.Martinsaid no thanks to LSU and chose tostick closer to home and play for Coach Spurrier, The State newspaper reported today. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback alsohad scholarship offers from Colorado, LSU, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska and Wake Forest.

He is the school's 12th commitment for 2011. As a junior, Martin had 44 tackles and one interception on defense, while returning kicks for 930 total yards and four touchdowns last year.

Great add for USC as this kid as speed. He ran a 4.3 people so now you see him...now you don't. I am sure he will be the next great DB at South Carolina.

Welcome to the Gamecocks Family.

Here is his highlight reel over at Rivals -

USC Gamecocks 2011 Recruiting Update
Written by Flounder

williams-brice-stadium1Let's take a quick second and provide a update on the 2011 USC Gamecocks Recruiting Class.  As you know, USC is sitting with seven recruits that have given their verbal to be future Gamecocks.

So let’s look at who has committed as of July 18th –

KJ Brent (6-4, 175) of Waxhaw, N.C. has given his pledge to be a future USC Gamecocks wide receiver.  He was the first to pledge for the 2011 class and turned down UK and many other NC schools.

QB Martay Mattox (6-1, 185) out of Athens, Ga was the next young man to say he wants to play for Coach Spurrier.  Last season, Martay passed for 1900 yds, threw 15 TDs and ran for 800 yds with 16 rushing TDs.  I am not sold on the fact that he will play QB at USC but bottom-line is he has loads of upside.  Could play in the secondary like a DeVonte Holloman.

The third commitment of the 2011 recruiting class is a defensive end named Mason Harris (6-4, 205) out of Rossville, Ga.  After reading up on this young guy, I like him.   Seems to fit the mold of DE’s that Ellis Johnson likes as he has a good motor and knows how to get around the edge.

Linebacker Edward Muldrow (6-4, 196) out of Snellville, Ga committed to the Gamecocks over Clemson.  Some put Muldrow in the talk of being one of the best LB’s in the nation.  Could see early time as a spur in Coach Johnson’s D.

DB Jared Henry (6-0, 184) out of Jacksonville, Fl who chose USC over USF and UCF.  He could either be a DB or a Safety at USC.  His current role is a safety, where he had 100 tackles and 2 INTs last season.

A defensive lineman by the name of Angelo Watley (6-3, 220) from Suwanee, Ga jumped early to be a USC Gamecocks football player.  As a junior, Watley totaled 30 tackles and 7 sacks.  USC coaches compare him to Eric Norwood – that is saying a lot in my book.

The seventh recruit and most recent is another DL by the name of Deon Green (6-3, 268) out of Orlando.  He grew up in O-Burg not too far from USC and reportedly grew up a Gamecock.  He had 75 tackles and 6 sacks last season at DE.  Slated to be a DL position player for the Gamecocks.  Going to go ahead and say he is going to be a great anchor up-front.  He had 28 offers to choose from and pledged to be a Gamecock.

Overall, I like this class so far and the way recruiting is going.  The coaches are not just taking anyone as they are being very targeted.  I suspect a real good class for 2011 and these 7 are just the beginning.

USC Recruit Kelcy Quarles a Non-Qualifier
Written by Flounder
Saturday, 03 July 2010 19:04

Kelcy Quarles failed to make a needed 840 on the SAT to qualify to enroll at the University of South Carolina.  Kelcy was a highly sought after defensive linemen that chose USC over many.  He was predicted to be in the mix for playing time at defensive line this fall.  Big blow to Coach Spurrier.

The 6-foot-3, 267-pound Parade All-American finished with 77 tackles, nine sacks, 17.5 tackles for loss and two blocked kicks as a senior last fall at Greenwood High.

Hate to see this happen to a great kid and a great athlete.  Hope for the best for Kelcy as he enrolls at either prep school or some sort of junior college for the fall semester to get his studies on track for USC come 2011.

Kelcy Quarles Situation No Surprise
Written by Flounder
Saturday, 26 June 2010 07:20

From the day he signed with the South Carolina Gamecocks, there has been questions surrounding if he was going to qualify.  Now word has trickled out that Kelcy failed to make a necessary 840 on the SAT and it may jeopardize his enrollment this fall.

We here hope he gets the academic requirements in order as he is loaded with talent.  In his senior season at Greenwood High (SC), The 6-foot-3, 267-pound Quarles finished with 77 tackles, nine sacks, 17.5 tackles for loss and two blocked kicks.

The Parade All-American will learn his fate later this summer and there are two options on how this plays out - enroll in USC in 2010 or go to JUCO/prep school thus delaying enrollment at USC until 2011.  I hope for the first option as he will be a stud at DL for Carolina.

USC Football News: Milsap and Quarles Fail to Qualify
Written by Flounder
Saturday, 03 July 2010 08:07

uscfootballskinWord out of USC, besides the baseball team's parade and championship celebration, is the two recruits have failed to qualify for freshman eligibility this coming fall.  Most knew Kelcy Quarles was on the fence if he would make the necessary test scores to earn a seat in this year's freshman class but a surprise name to come forward is Duvan Milsap.  Seems he too has failed to meet the standards to be able to enroll this fall at Carolina.

Kelcy will enroll at Fork Union Prep and plans to enroll at SC in January 2011.  I think this is a big blow to the team as he could have made a impact early on the DL and the very least added some depth.  Color me disappointed.

Duvan is going the junior college route.  He was a good add on the OL for the future but as I noted in my OL preview, he was facing a redshirt.

Sad to see this occur to two good kids but hope they will hit the books in get back to USC very soon.

Welcome Edward Muldrow to Gamecocks Football
Written by Flounder

Let’s welcome our newest and fifth verbal commitment of the 2011 recruiting cycle for the USC Gamecocks as linebacker Edward Muldrow (Snellville, Ga./North Gwinnett) picked the Gamecocks late Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect is considered to be one of the top linebacker prospects in the country as he is a 3 star LB and rated in the Top 40 by most recruiting services.  He could see some time at USC in their “Spur” position early on.

He picked the Gamecocks over Clemson. He also had around 14 offers from programs like Kentucky, Arkansas, North Carolina, Florida State, West Virginia, Ole Miss ….just to name a few he decided against.

This is the second commitment this week for USC.  He joins WR K.J. Brent, ATH Martay Mattox, DE Mason Harris and S Jared Henry on the Gamecocks' commitment list for 2011.

Jared Henry Committs to USC

wallpaper_1The Jacksonville recruiting pipeline has produced another for the South Carolina Gamecocks. This time around Safety Jared Henry (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) has given his verbal pledge to wear the garnet and black.

This is the same school that gave USC Shaq Wilson and Corey Addison.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Henry had around 100 tackles and 2 INTs last season and his commitment is part of the 2011 recruiting cycle.  Slated to play safety at USC.

He also had offers from Maryland, USF, UCF, Purdue, Rutgers, Missouri, Marshall, Vanderbilt and Arkansas State.

Gamecock Recruiting for the future
Written by Flounder
Thursday, 05 February 2009 11:59

Here is an article on Maxprep.com that has a list of its high school sophomore All American’s. There are a couple kids in USC back yard that might turn out to be gamecocks down the road.

QB Justin Worley Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.), 6-3, 179

MaxPreps’ National Sophomore of the Year, Worley was flat out dominant. His 50 touchdown passes is three short of the state record set by former Byrnes quarterback Willy Korn. His 3,641 passing yards is a school record.

QB Everett Golson Myrtle Beach (S.C.), 6-0, 167

Ironically, Worley’s stiffest competition for National Sophomore of the Year came from only 200 miles away. Golson, already a highly coveted prospect, finished second in the state in yards (3,587), completions (238), and touchdowns (44) – all behind Worley.

OL Brandon Shell, West Ashley (S.C.), 6-8, 280

Nephew of Hall of Famer Art Shell, Brandon is similarly endowed with talent. He excels at both football and basketball, and may look to play both in college.

WR Charon Peake, Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.), 6-3, 185

Peake was one of the first players in his class to receive scholarship offers. The gifted athlete is dangerous each time he touches the ball. Expect him to explode as a junior as Dorman should shift to a more pass friendly offense.

DL Jadaveon Clowney, South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.), 6-5, 220

A key defensive ingredient to South Pointe’s undefeated run, Clowney is already hearing from local schools, and could be a national recruit as an upperclassman. A 4-AAAA all-region selection, Clowney had six sacks and forced four fumbles to complement his 65 tackles.
