Gamecocks Winning Combination for Omaha: Mohawk & Avatar Spirit Stick

So what do you get when you add a Mohawk and a Avatar Spirit Stick?

Winning Baseball, duh.

Seems the strange combination is working for the USC Gamecocks Baseball team in this postseason.  The Gamecocks left today for Omaha and we hope they are taking with them the two things below:

1. Nick Ebert’s Mohawk Haircut

The ‘do’ brought some luck to Ebert as Neil Smith of The State writes HERE.  You may recall, Ebert as he pinch-hit for Evan Marzilli in the sixth inning, delivered a key RBI single in the win versus Coastal Carolina this past weekend.

2. “Avatar Spirit Stick”

Another good luck charm to make sure is in the bag is the stick pictured above (photo credit – The State).  Travis Haney of the P&C writes about it HERE as well as Ron Morris from the The State in his story HERE.

Odd right?  Travis writes during a rain delay as the team waited for the sky’s to open, well here ya go –

“With the room lit only by candles, the team danced and chanted around the bat in a ritualistic manner. Coaches weren’t allowed in the room. In fact, one ducked in, saw what was happening and immediately turned around.”

Ron takes it one step further –

“The clubhouse séance was intended to exorcise the demons from USC’s bats. Then, when the team returned to the dugout to resume play, Beary said an illustration was needed on how the team should begin hitting.

Beary grabbed a baseball and taped it to a fungo bat. The concept was simple, Beary explained to his teammates: You put the bat to the ball to produce hits. Presto! USC also had its “Avatar” spirit stick, and players since have touched it for good luck before going to bat.”

I hope to see both at the College World Series for SC; if it means winning baseball games for USC then keep on doing what you are doing while adding in some good pitching and timely hitting.  Whatever it takes to bring home the CWS crown, right?
