Around town health tips

Written by Moose on .

Since we have been on a gas price theme here at the hot dog for the past few post I figured I would throw my 2 cents in. I saw in a health article some ways to get fit in your everyday life.

Here is a health tip #1 while at the pump.

Instead of fuming over gas prices, think about firming your calves: With one hand on your car, stand on the balls of your feet and slowly rise up and down for as long as it takes your tank to fill- for a SUV that might be 75 raises. This will burn up to 15 calories. no comments

Breathalyzers in cars??

Written by Ritch on .

Seems we may be getting closer to having breathalyzers in cars some day soon. Could the day be coming when every driver is checked for drinking before starting a car? With a push from MADD and there is currently a New York bill that would require the devices on all cars and trucks by 2009; this may come to your town soon. And automakers, already close to offering the devices as optional equipment on all Volvo and Saab models in Sweden, are considering whether to bring the technology here.
Manufacturers are perfecting technology that could detect alcohol on the skin surface, eliminating the need for the current, cumbersome, blow-into-a-tube breath-analyzing systems.

Seems a little exreme, you decide by reading the article here. no comments

Parents and computers

Written by Ritch on .

We all know that computers can drive you crazy but recently a Parent in Fla shot at it while his son was playing games on it. The parent thought the son spent too much time on the computer and not enough on house work. One could argue that there are better ways to handle this situation but that is just me.

Below is the story.......I think Will Smith said it best "parents just don't understand....."

Dad shoots at computer, saying son spends too much time playing games
]Dunedin, Florida] - A Dunedin dad probably made his point about his son spending too much time on the computer. Pinellas Sheriff's deputies say he shot at the monitor as his son sat near-by. Forty-four-year-old Joseph Langenderfer was arrested Monday afternoon at his home on Frances Street.
His 22-year-old son Tim called 911, saying he and his dad were arguing and his dad had just shot at him.
The older Langenderfer reportedly told deputies he was mad that his son had not done the laundry and was spending all his time playing games on their computer. He told deputies that although he told his son he was going to shoot the computer, the gun accidentally fired.
The bullet hit the wall about three feet from where the son was sitting.
Langenderfer is in the Pinellas County jail charged with one count of attempted murder, (accused of trying to kill his son, not the computer.)

A Columbia Loss...

Written by Ritch on .

is a Greenville gain. This blog mentioned a few posts awhile back about the opening of the West End Field and the Greenville Drive. Seems that The State decided to write about it also...here. It discusses how the baseball team was a big loss for the City of Columbia and a great gain for Greenville. I have been to the new stadium and it truly is wonderful and a great investment by the City of Greenville. I was sorry to see the G-Braves leave but the 'drive' fit in nicely. no comments

How high can you go?

Written by Ritch on .

Many of you know how I feel about gas and how our country is addicted to oil. I won't go into detail today but something is wrong with the gas system and our economy. I know our econmy is doing great on many fronts, these are the best of times: Unemployment is at 4.7 percent, lower than the averages of the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. The economy is showing strong, consistent growth, without significant inflation. And the stock market is roaring along. I know their our other issues to contend with like Iraq, Iran and trade issues with China. But this Gas issue (the oil based product not the other type) is a big concern. Do you realize that if gas prices hold steady right now we will be paying almost $500 dollars (on average) more in gas for the year as compared to last year? Wow....

Well, I ran across a AP article today stating the gas prices across the country. The high was at a station in Cali. It reads, "full service high octane gas reaches $4.049 dollars per gallon Thursday, April 20, 2006, at a gas station in Beverly Hills, Calif. Oil prices held steady near record highs Thursday after weekly data showed a drop in U.S. gasoline stocks, raising worries that refiners don't have an adequate inventory cushion ahead of the peak summer driving season." Wow....I thought I had it bad with gas floating between $2.71 to $2.81 here in upstate SC depending on which station. I guess the point of this story is..."No matter how bad you think you have it in life it can always be worse....." no comments

University of South Carolina

13 up, 9 down

A school in a town designed for college kids. Within a mile radius, you can make a fake ID at Kinko's, buy a bottle of everclear at Greene's, mix it with a Sonic slushy, sell your plasma for bar money, and head to Five Points. From there you can get arrested, taken to the Richland County Jail and can walk to the football stadium for the game the next day if your friends don't bail you out in time. Whoever designed this college and city knew what they were doing. And whoever came up with the mascot -- well, wherever that person is, I'm sure he's still smiling about it. no comments

$74 dollars and counting....

Written by Ritch on .

that is right boys and girls....price of a barrel of crude just set a new high mark. Oil jumped to a fresh record high above $74 a barrel on Thursday after a steep drop in U.S. gasoline inventories fueled fears of tight summer supplies at a time of growing anxiety over Iran's exports.
The United States government on Wednesday reported a larger-than-expected drop in gasoline inventories of over 5 million barrels, adding to concern created by the shutdown of almost a quarter of Nigeria's oil output and the row over Iran's nuclear program. You gotta love a global economy these dayz and geo-politics...my prediction is that we will hit $100 dollars a barrel by June 1st...any other predictions out there?? Iran, Nigeria and Venz. are making it hard for us to buy cheap gas these days.

But the truth is that is what it will take for people to begin to wake up on this 'gas addiction' issue. People are not going to begin to conserve gas until we are all paying $4-5 bucks a gallon. This will anger the public which will force the auto makers and oil industry to begin to react.....who knows it may cause us to take a serious look at alternative fuels and cars. Lastly, I saw a man on a moped this morning to work....I use to laugh at that....but now I think to myself how smart this guy is (assuming that is guy is not a DUI case and that is why he is riding a moped) saving money by doing that while the rest of us are paying more and more to fill up the tanks! I think he is laughing at us..... no comments

THE ODOR THAT LIES BENEATH

Written by Moose on .

Man that is some smelly feet!! The root of the stench comes from his faithful companion. "How is that," you ask? Well time and time I again, I have personally witnessed Dev stick his toes in "Taps" butt. (The name was changed to protect his identity). Dev thinks it's really funny to do this. I'm not talking just the tip, it's the whole toe. You should see "Taps" face when he gets to the big toe. After doing this crazy thing, he does not clean his feet. He puts his shoes on and lets little microscopic particles of "Taps" pooh fester. That is why it is much worse during the summer. Just thinking about it makes me almost throw up. I hope I've answered your question. no comments
