South Carolina Spring Football 2012: Thoughts on Running Backs

lattimore-bw-uscSouth Carolina has a talented stable of capable running backs but the lead workhorse is Marcus Lattimore. The question is who will emerge as the backup.

Lattimore will not take part in the spring practice but he will be the starter in 2012. He has already rushed for over 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns and that is while missing several games over those two seasons.

The job for the No.2 slot will be a battle between Kenny Miles, Brandon Wilds and Shon Carson.

If Miles commits he could win out the job but expect Wilds to push hard for playing time. Carson is likely a “change-of-pace” back due to his quickness and is a year out from challenging for the starting role.

The feel-good story would be if Miles wins the job coming out of spring as he is on-the-fence concerning his continued tenure at USC. Indicators point to Miles sticking around. Expect Miles to overcome the challenge and be named the No. 2 heading into fall ball. He has got from running a 4.7 to a 4.5 and looks strong.

Should be fun to watch USC pound the ball in 2012.
