Shaq Roland’s TD: History Repeats Itself

In the second half of Saturday night’s win over UAB, Shaq Roland caught his first touchdown pass of his college career. Dylan Thompson found Roland on a deep post in the North end zone. When it happened, the catch reminded me of another player’s first TD catch. First though, here’s Shaq’s touchdown.

Now, here is Bruce Ellington’s 1st TD catch against Clemson last season.

They look similar right? They are the same spot on the field and same endzone. They’re both deep posts, but they’re different plays. Shaq’s looks to be a play called Mills which has been a Spurrier favorite for many years. Bruce’s appeared to be a variation on Lefty, another vintage Spurrier ball play. Both plays are below, first Shaq’s and then Bruce’s.

The play book pages came from Bruce Eien’s website. Some of Spurrier’s other plays can be found there too.
