Notes From The Gamecocks Rooster Den

269-sirbigspurleadart_lead_art_horizontal_prod_affiliate_74Here are a collection of notes that are scattered within the “Rooster Den” that you can use when talking about the USC Gamecocks after a loss to Kentucky and a upcoming win at Vandy.  Yeah I said it but Sir Big Spur has stuck his neck out and said they will win.  Just look at that bird, he is pissed as USC had not buisness stumbling in Lexington.  Look for the ship to be righted at the expense of Vandy.

  • USC is 15-4 all-time against Vanderbilt
  • Vanderbilt has won two of the last three meetings
  • Stephen Garcia is the 6th QB in USC history to pass 5000 passing yards
  • Marcus Lattimore has 12 TDs, 4 shy of the single season school record
  • Vanderbilt is 2-4 overall, 1-2 in the SEC with a win at Ole Miss
  • Vandy head coach Robby Caldwell is a Furman grad and Pageland, SC native
  • Three Vandy assistants and four players are from the Palmetto State
  • USC is outscoring opponents in the 1st half this season 128-48
  • USC is being outscored 77-58 in the second half this season
  • For the second time in three games, USC threw for more than 300 yards (382 yards) and rushed for less than 100 yards. The common denominator? The Gamecocks lost both games.
  • Under Spurrier, USC is now 5-7 when they pass for 300 yards or more and just when they gain than 100 yards on the ground.
  • USC is 26-48 on the road against SEC foes since joining the league in 1992.
  • USC has gone 0-4 in SEC road games only 4 times since 1992. One of those years was 2009. USC looking to snap 7-game SEC road skid.
  • USC has no business being in last place in the SEC or 110th in the country in pass defense, but that’s where they now find themselves (270.8 ypg). Four of the first six opponents have passed for 274 yards or more, three for 315 yards or more. In the last two games, USC has given up 664 total passing yards.
  • USC has been nationally ranked for 7 straight weeks.
  • Interesting contrast about Garcia. In his 12 wins as a starter, Garcia has completed 63.7% of passes for 2,241 yds with 19 TD and 10 INT.  But in his 10 losses, Garcia has completed 53.4% of his passes for 2,380 yards with 11 TD and 13 INT. Avoiding poor decisions is key for SG.
  • South Carolina football ranks first in the SEC in both red zone offense and defense. The Gamecocks are 21-for-23 on offense and the defense has allowed just 16 scores in 24 opportunities with eight of the 16 being field goals.
  • Spurrier won his first 15 games against Vanderbilt, but the Commodores have beaten the Gamecocks in two of their last three meetings. South Carolina needed a fourth quarter touchdown to beat Vanderbilt 14-10 last season.

Interesting Quote After the Kentucky Loss

“We just weren’t playing assignment football,” defensive end Melvin Ingram said. “We didn’t trust the next person to us and we were all trying to make big plays instead of playing together as a team.”
