Gamecocks Top 20 for ’12: No. 17

NOTE: This South Carolina Gamecocks blog is counting down the Top 20 projected players on South Carolina’s 2012 team. Players are measured on overall importance and expected productivity during the upcoming season.

The basics:
Akeem Auguste is slated to be the starter at corner. USC needs his leadership and needs him be be healthy. If Auguste can not go then Jimmy Legree will get a shot or even one of the new guys. Really though, if USC is going to go to the BCS bowl then they need Auguste at corner.

Rewind:
Auguste is a experienced player who has appeared in 36 contests making 19 career starts. In 2010, he finished sixth on the team with 58 tackles and had four tackles for loss. That was his best year and in 2011, again he did not play much due to a foot issue.

Forecast:
LOHD feels this has to be the year that Auguste steps up. He is a fifth year senior and the time is now due to the lack of depth in the secondary. Auguste must play big and avoid injury in 2012. He has the talent, knows the scheme and has experience. Look for him to do his job in 2012. He will not be a superstar but he will not hurt ya but the big “if” revolves around his health.

Others in Top 20
No. 20 – Shaq Roland
– No. 19 – A.J. Cann
– No. 18 – Brison Williams
