South Carolina at Clemson: Position-By-Position Breakdown

Written by Flounder on .

The second oldest rivalry in college football will commence once again on Saturday as the South Carolina Gamecocks will clash with the Clemson Tigers. At stake is a quality bowl game for each team but most important is the bragging rights.

The Gamecocks have won the last three games against Clemson, their first three-game winning streak against the Tigers since 1968-70. South Carolina has only won four in a row once, from 1951-54.

By now, you have read our preview of the game, our concerns for South Carolina, watched our little Clemson jab and now here is a position by position breakdown concerning who has the edge:

Gamecocks Football: 3 Concerns When Playing Clemson

Written by Flounder on .

The South Carolina Gamecocks travel on Friday to Clemson, S.C. to face the Tigers for will certainly be a Saturday showdown. As noted in our preview of the game, both teams have a lot riding on the game and both teams desire the win at all costs.

In this blog post, I want to share my three concerns that I have for my beloved Gamecocks when they battle the Tigers. Here they are:

1. The 1st Quarter. The Tigers are like a heavyweight fighter, they desire to come out fast and throw everything at you. The purpose is to stagger you and for the Gamecocks they have to remain calm while playing tight defense. South Carolina has to come out of the gates ready to play. I would love to see USC score first and then force CU to go three-and-out. This would stun the Tigers a little and take the crowd out of it.

2. Connor Shaw. I really hope he can play and hope his foot does not limit him. No offense to Dylan Thompson but I feel against CU, Shaw is the best option due to his play-making abilities on the run.

3. Gamecocks Tackling. In this game, the South Carolina defenders have to play their best game in the tackling category. Clemson has speed in the skill positions and if you miss, there could be a touchdown to follow. Sammy "Smoke'em If you got them" Watkins is always one miss tackle on the screen pass from hurting you. The other Ellington, after he dances around a little, can make a defender miss and his the ability to take-it-to-the-house. USC must tackle well in this game.

Ok so to recap, the Gamecocks have to come out and have a strong start. The must withstand the Clemson 1st quarter assault. USC needs Connor Shaw and he needs to perform like last game against the Tigers - effective decisions. And lastly, the Gamecocks must tackle well in this game.

I still feel like USC will win but they must overcome the above three concerns.

Gamecocks Football Field Report: Wofford

Written by Billy Koehler on .

As expected South Carolina struggled with I-AA Wofford and didn't pull away until late.  Though many expected the Terriers to give the Gamecocks a run for their money, few expected USC's offense to have as much trouble as it did.

In years past the difficulty South Carolina's offense has had against option teams is a lack of possessions with which to produce points.  This year, USC had 8 meaningful possessions scoring  two touchdowns and a field goal.  The offense turned the ball over on two possessions as well.

Those turnovers were early, killed promising drives and made the game much closer than it needed to be.  They also seemed to influence the offense the rest of the game.  Carolina was more conservative throwing the ball, especially staying away from throwing downfield.  The result was an unproductive and constipated offensive attack.  Happily USC has developed enough offensive line talent to impose a rushing game on the Terriers.  Kenny Miles's career high rushing total is evidence of that.

South Carolina Defeats Wofford: Video of Top 3 Plays

Written by Flounder on .

South Carolina got the win against the visiting Wofford Terriers. It was not pretty the first three quarters but the Gamecocks came to life in the final quarter to get the 24-7 win.

The win allowed USC to finish with a perfect 7-0 at home for the first time since 1987. USC has now won 11 straight home games dating back to Oct. 8 of last year.

Speaking of the win versus Wofford, here are the Top 3 plays:

#3 Sanders TD Catch gives USC a cushion in their lead

#2 Here Swearinger laying the wood, causing a fumble....

#1 Here is Auguste taking a fumble to the house....

Jadeveon Clowney Will Break the Sack Record at South Carolina Saturday

Written by Flounder on .

South Carolina football fans go ahead and bet on Jadeveon Clowney breaking the single-season sack record against Wofford on Saturday.

Cloweny has recorded 9.5 sacks on the season and stands only a half-sack away from tying the school single-season record (10) currently held by both Andrew Provence and Melvin Ingram.

No offense to the Terriers defense but you are not going to stop Clowney from getting at least one sack to break the record on Saturday. I feel sorry for the Wofford quarterback.

SEC Bowl Projections November 13

Written by Billy Koehler on .

Alabama's loss shook up the entire bowl picture.  Here's what we are projecting this week:

Sugar Bowl: Alabama v. Oklahoma

The Crimson Tide will need some help to get back into the national championship game, and if they don't get it they will be headed to the Sugar Bowl without question.  The Sooners should finish strong and be an attractive candidate for a battle of perennial powers.

Fiesta Bowl: Texas A&M v. Notre Dame

The SEC has #4-#9 in the BCS, so after the champion is chosen for the Sugar any other BCS bowl can pick from that group.  A&M in the Fiesta would be very attractive to those in Tempe, so this may happen.  The Domers are probably going to lose to Southern Cal, but they will still be getting a BCS invite.

Capital One Bowl: Georgia v. Michigan

The Bulldogs could get passed over for LSU or Florida, but they haven't been to Orlando in a few years, and they will be SEC East champions.  Michigan will probably lose to Ohio State and be the second choice from the B1G.

Gamecocks Football Field Report: Arkansas

Written by Billy Koehler on .

Sorry for the delayed field report.  Sunday's basketball game threw off my usual Sunday schedule, but I'll happily trade a tardy field report for a hard court win.  If you are in Columbia and are available Friday night, go see Frank Martin's Gamecocks.  You'll be glad you did.  Anyway, on to the field report.

For the first time in 5 weeks the Gamecocks had a reason to feel triumphant.  After losing to LSU and Florida, USC then lost Marcus Lattimore and had an off week.  That's not exactly the recipe for putting the fan base in a good mood.  What should put the Gamecocks in a good mood is ending the longest losing streak on their schedule and putting 38 points on the Razorbacks.  A late cosmetic score made the game look closer than it actually was, but there was no doubt who the better team was on Saturday.

Hopefully the win put some more energy in a fan base that has had to adjust its season goals downward lately.  The team doesn't seem to be as sluggish as the fan base appeared.  Until D.J. Swearinger single handedly brought the crowd into the game, it was an uninspired effort by those in the stands.  Leading (or failing to lead) the way was a student section that has been an embarrassment all season long.  They never filled their section and appeared to leave as soon as possible.
