South Carolina Basketball: Battling Western Carolina Tonight

The South Carolina Gamecocks basketball team opens up the season against the reigning Southern Conference Men’s Basketball North Division co-Champion Western Carolina.  Tip is set for just after 7:00 pm at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. and will be televised by SportSouth.

It is the eighth all-time meeting between the Catamounts and Gamecocks with WCU still searching for its first victory over the USC with a 0-7 overall mark.

Let’s look at this game further….

The Catamounts should not be taken for granted by USC in this game as they play balanced with high energy.  One player from WCU that USC needs to keep in check is the defending SoCon Freshman of the Year, Trey Sumler. Named to the Mid-Major Freshman All-America team, Sumler averaged 11.5 points per game last season.

South Carolina returns 63 percent of its’ scoring from last year and just like in their exhibition game, they need a solid team effort to garner a win.

I expect freshman forward Anthony Gill, junior forward/guard Lakeem Jackson and sophomore forward Damontre Harris to play big in this game.  Look for those three to lead the USC charge.

The key sin this game for USC is to drain three’s and crash the boards.

I say USC by 10.
